2 arrested in major southwest valley grow house bust

Updated Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 | 4:44 p.m.

Two men have been taken into custody in the southwest valley in connection with a marijuana grow house bust being called the largest so far this year, Metro Police said.

Officers served a search warrant about 3 p.m. today at a house in the 9600 block of Grouse Grove Avenue, near Post and Fort Apache roads, Lt. Laz Chavez said.

The house is estimated to contain more than 500 marijuana plants, with one room believed to contain at least 360 plants, he said.

Those numbers can change as detectives investigate further.

Police also found money strewn about the house, Chavez said.

Two Chinese nationals were arrested, one who tried to flee while the warrant was served and another who was driving away from the house, Chavez said.

Neither of the men are medical marijuana patients, and their legal status is undetermined, he said.

Practically every room is being used to grow marijuana, leading to significant damage in the house, which is a rental property, Chavez said.

The house also has a power bypass, which allows the property to use power before it can be measured by a meter, resulting in low power bills, he said.

Police received a tip about a possible drug operation at the house about a week ago from a concerned citizen, he said.

The bust was an operation by the Southern Nevada Cannabis Operation and Regional Enforcement team, which is made up of representatives from organizations including Metro Police, Henderson Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The task force has been busier than usual lately, Chavez said.
