Put down the phone: NLV Police target distracted drivers

North Las Vegas Police issued 186 citations in 10 hours Friday during a patrol that targeted distracted driving and other traffic violations.

Officers cited drivers around the city for offenses including distracted driving, speeding, failing to show due care to pedestrians and failing to stop for stop signs and lights.

Police emphasized the 19 distracted driving citations, saying officers are seeing a rise in citations issued as people use and try to hide cellphones and other mobile devices while driving.

“This is extremely dangerous and leads to a number of other traffic violations, such as failure to yield to other traffic and pedestrians, as well as failing to maintain a travel lane,” North Las Vegas Police said in a statement. “It also leads to increased rear-end collisions.”

The fine for distracted driving with a mobile device is $115 for the first offense, $195 for the second offense and $355 for the third offense.
