Nevada taxable sales up 10.2 percent in December

CARSON CITY — Taxable sales in December were strong in Nevada, up 10.2 percent compared to the same month in 2013.

The state Department of Taxation reported Wednesday that taxable sales reached $4.8 billion, with big jumps in furniture sales and construction.

The increase was the largest monthly percentage gain since a 10.4 percent rise in May 2012.

Sales in Clark County were up 10.9 percent, and Washoe County recorded an 8.2 percent gain. Storey County, where a Tesla battery factory is being located, jumped 531.2 percent in taxable sales.

Nye County, meanwhile, saw a 23.4 percent decline, and Pershing County was off 22.4 percent compared to a year ago.

In Clark County, sales of building materials rose 11.1 percent; general merchandise sales inched up 0.5 percent; auto sales increased 11.1 percent; furniture sales gained 18.1 percent; and bars and restaurants were up 7.6 percent.
