Second suspect in L.A. patrol car shooting arrested in Las Vegas

LOS ANGELES — A second suspect was arrested Wednesday after a weekend shooting in which Los Angeles police officers came under fire. James Brooks, 19, was wanted in Sunday's shooting and was captured by federal agents in Las Vegas, KNBC-TV reported. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller confirmed the arrest but referred all questions on charges to the Los Angeles Police Department. An LAPD spokeswoman was unable to provide any information. Officers drove into the line of fire Sunday in a tough area of Los Angeles where gang members were shooting at rivals in another car, prosecutors said. Authorities were initially concerned the two officers had been ambushed just days after two New York City officers were killed. However, an investigation determined that the patrol car arrived at the scene as two gang members were shooting at a car as it drove away, prosecutors said. No one was injured after one of the unidentified officers returned fire. Christopher Taylor, 18, was arrested at the scene. The district attorney's office said in a statement that Taylor, a reputed gang member, was charged with two counts each of assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic firearm and shooting into an occupied vehicle, and one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Police retrieved a rifle and a pistol at the scene. Taylor's arraignment was postponed to Jan. 15 and prosecutors said they'll ask for bail to be set at $2 million. If convicted, Taylor could face life in prison. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
