An intruder police said was shot and killed by a resident during a home invasion has been identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as 41-year-old Steven Paul Speidel.

Speidel, a Las Vegas resident, died of a gunshot wound of the torso after engaging in a gunfight Wednesday at a house in the 8100 block of Cactus Flower Court, near Alta Drive and Cimarron Road, officials said.

Metro Police received a report about 11:30 a.m. of a home invasion and an injured suspect in the cul-de-sac, police said.

Speidel and another person broke into the house by kicking in the door, and Speidel followed the resident upstairs with a handgun, police said.

The resident retrieved a gun, and the two engaged in a gunfight, police said.

Speidel was shot and ran from the house, collapsing in the street, police said. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The resident was not injured, and the second suspect fled the scene, police said.

It does not appear the resident and Speidel knew each other, but an investigation is ongoing, Officer Larry Hadfield said.
