North Las Vegas police identify officer involved in traffic stop shooting

North Las Vegas Police have released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man they say pulled a gun at a traffic stop Sunday night.

Officer Loren Cooley has been with the department for seven years and is on routine paid leave during the investigation, North Las Vegas Police said.

Cooley was one of two officers conducting a traffic stop involving 29-year-old Salvador Figueroa and 27-year-old Karina Carlota Zaragoza-Maldanado around 8:25 p.m. in a convenience store parking lot at Eastern and Searles avenues, police said.

Zaragoza-Maldanado was arrested during the traffic stop on charges including felony possession of methamphetamine, and Figueroa fled on foot, police said.

Cooley chased Figueroa across Searles into a business parking lot and back to the scene before using a stun gun, police said.

The stun gun had little effect, and Figueroa pulled out a handgun, leading Cooley to shoot him multiple times, police said.

Figueroa was pronounced dead at the scene.
