Five police departments in the Las Vegas area are joining nearly 200 other agencies across the country in inviting people to “Coffee with a Cop.”

Thursday’s event is hosted by the Metro, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, and Mesquite police departments. It will take place at 13 locations that will offer free coffee to participants.

The outreach program, which began in Hawthorne, Calif., in 2011, is an effort to bring police officers and residents together to informally discuss issues in their communities. The U.S. Justice Department has helped it expand to more than 175 locations across the country.

“It’s just a way for people to come and get to know the police officers that work in their neighborhoods in a less stressful situation than they might normally see an officer in,” said Kathleen Richards, a spokeswoman for the Henderson Police Department.

• Metro Bolden Area Command — Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey, North Las Vegas
