Nevada Court of Appeals issues its first ruling

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s new Court of Appeals has issued its first decision, officials announced today.

The new court's three judges were sworn into office Jan. 6, and the Nevada Supreme Court transferred 167 cases to the Court of Appeals, based in Las Vegas.

In its first case, the Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of Johnny William Johnson, who was found guilty in Las Vegas of two counts of attempted murder and five other charges in the wounding of Monique Traylor in 2012.

District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt sentenced Johnson to two consecutive terms of eight to 20 years and an additional four to 10 years.

“We have hit the ground running,” Appeals Court Chief Judge Michael Gibbons said. He said he expects the Court of Appeals will get 700 cases a year for rulings.
