Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian announced today she’s running for re-election to a third full term in this year’s municipal election.

Tarkanian represents Ward 1, which covers the southwest part of the city’s core, generally located west the I-15 and north of Sahara Avenue, stretching to Buffalo Drive and Washington Avenue.

There had been speculation in recent weeks that Tarkanian would forego a third run because of the declining health of her husband, former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian.

Lois Tarkanian has served 10 years on the council after winning a special election to the post in 2005 and winning two subsequent elections to full terms in 2007 and 2011.

Although term limits restrict officials to 12 years in a single office, Tarkanian is eligible to serve another four years because she won’t be at the limit when her new term would begin.

Tarkanian is the only council incumbent running who opposed public funding for a $200 million downtown soccer stadium, which is a top issue heading into campaign season.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman supported the stadium and has drawn a challenge for her seat from Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony, who voted against the stadium subsidy.

Councilmen Bob Coffin and Ricki Barlow also voted in favor of the stadium and are expected to draw challengers in their bids for re-election.

Candidate filing opens Tuesday and runs through Feb. 6. The primary will be held on April 7 and the general election, if necessary, will be on June 2.
