Education chief touts value of school choice

CARSON CITY — The head of Nevada’s K-12 education system says he believes in school choice and that Gov. Brian Sandoval has provided money for such programs.

Dale Eriquaga, state superintendent of public instruction, spoke to a crowd of about 400 at a rally for school choice on the grounds of the state capitol. It was part of a national day to promote choice in the education system

“I believe in school choice,” including home schooling, private schools, online education and charter schools Erquiaga said.

He said the governor has included in his budget money for charter schools and scholarships for poor students to take technology courses.

Speakers stressed the need for an educated work force to handle the jobs of Nevada’s future.

Supporters wore yellow scarves, and there were performance by school bands.
