Officers shoot, kill man who hit police dog with hammer

STOCKTON, Calif.— Authorities shot and killed a man who hit a Northern California police dog with a hammer and then swung the tool at an officer.

Stockton police spokesman Joe Silva tells KFSN-TV that the Stockton man died Tuesday night at a hospital. No one else was injured, and the dog is expected to recover.

Silva says officers responded to a home over reports of a drunken man wielding a hammer and destroying the residence.

Officers told the man to put down the tool, but he refused. Police used stun guns on him, but that failed to subdue the man, whose name wasn't released.

A police dog went to take him down, and he hit the animal with the hammer. The man tried to strike an officer who ran to the dog's aid, so officers shot him.
