A man who was sleeping when two people barged into his family’s home Tuesday grabbed a handgun and shot at the intruders then followed them outside with an AK-47 rifle and opened fire as they fled in a car, Metro Police said.

The couple, both suffering gunshot wounds, drove to North Vista Hospital, where a male suspect was pronounced dead, police said. The Clark County Coroner's Office identified him as Willie M. Pro, 33, address unknown. He died of a gunshot wound to the buttock, officials said.

A female suspect, Tiffany Carter, 29, of Las Vegas was transferred to University Medical Center and booked in absentia on counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, home invasion, robbery and conspiracy, police said. Carter, who also goes by the name Tarneshia Harris, was critically wounded, police said.

The incident unfolded about 9 a.m. Tuesday in the 3800 block of King Palm Avenue, near Alexander and Pecos roads, where a mother and four sons — ages 12, 16, 19 and 23 — were home, according to a Metro arrest report.

Carter knocked on the door and forced her way inside after telling the 12-year-old who answered that her car had broken down and she needed to use the phone, the report said.

The male suspect followed her inside with a handgun and pointed it at the boy, telling him to keep quiet, the report said.

The gunman then broke into a bedroom where the 23-year-old son had been sleeping and pointed his weapon at him, the report said. The son grabbed a 40-caliber handgun from a nightstand and fired at the intruder, who fled the house, police said.

He next confronted Carter, who had grabbed his mother’s purse, snatching back the handbag and firing more shots as she fled the house, the report said.

After that, he got his AK-47 and fired one round at a gold Oldsmobile sedan as the intruders fled, the report said.

The family called 911, locked the door, and waited for police as the eldest son stood guard outside with his rifle, the report said. He immediately dropped the rifle and followed orders when officers arrived, police said.
