letters to the editor:

Poor education is the source of problems

We’ve all heard how important education is, but I’ve been convinced of how true that is by personal experience. I’ve prepared bankruptcy petitions for people who cannot afford an attorney for 15 years.

They are all ages and any ethnicity. Almost without exception, however, they are all poorly educated — at least 95 percent of the people who walk through my door. I can see it in speaking with them, in how they spell and fill out forms, and in their financial life story, which they must tell in the bankruptcy petition.

We can blame what has happened to our society on many things, and they have all played a role, but poor education is the linchpin to all of it.
