Smoke from fireworks drifts over the Las Vegas Strip just after midnight Jan. 1, 2011. An estimated 320,000 people came to Las Vegas to celebrate the New Year, tourism officials said. This photo was taken from Mix atop The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

The anticipated smoke from Fourth of July fireworks has prompted Clark County to issue an air quality advisory for Saturday and Sunday.

Smoke contains small dust particles and other pollutants that can aggravate respiratory diseases and contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, according to the Clark County Department of Air Quality.

Ground-level ozone, a key ingredient of urban smog, can build up during the afternoon because of factors, including strong sunlight, hot temperatures and pollutants from automobiles and other sources, including fireworks.

Detailed information on air quality conditions is posted in the monitoring section of the department’s website.
