Assembly Speaker Hambrick’s personal email hacked, sends out spam blast

Legislature Opening Day

Republican John Hambrick conducts business during the opening session of the Nevada Legislature in Carson City on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015.

Nevada Assembly Speaker John Hambrick’s personal email account just sent out a fundraising request — but it wasn’t the usual kind asking for money to help his reelection. Instead, it asked his political allies, including state lawmakers, for cash to be wired to the Ukraine.

Hambrick’s email account has — presumably — been hacked.

“Sorry for any inconvenience, I’m in a terrible situation,” the email message started. The lawmakers and political operatives to whom it was sent could be forgiven for opening it. The title, “Urgent Please !!!! ………. John Hambrick.” sounds similar to common fundraising requests. But the rest of the email was far from usual.

Here’s the full text of it, which Republican campaign consultant Chuck Muth posted to Twitter this morning:

“Sorry for any inconvenience, I’m in a terrible situation,

Am stranded here in Vinnitsa Ukraine since last night. I was beaten and robbed on my way to the hotel I stayed and my luggage is still in custody of the hotel management pending when I make payment on outstanding bills I owe. Am waiting for my assistant to send me money to get back home but hasn’t responded. pls let me know if you can help and I will refund the money back to you as soon as I get back home. My return flight will be leaving soon, please let me know if I can count on you.”

Hambrick, a Las Vegas Republican, was reportedly in town this week.

Calls and emails to Hambrick have not been returned.
