Passengers who took off from Las Vegas on an approximately five-hour flight to Baltimore didn’t get there for more than 20 hours after the plane was diverted because of a possible fire, according to Southwest Airlines.
It turned out there was no fire, company officials said.
Southwest Flight 4649 was scheduled to land in Baltimore at 12:15 a.m. EST on Friday following a 4 p.m. departure from McCarran International Airport. It didn’t touch down in Baltimore until 4 p.m. Friday.
According to Southwest, the captain diverted the plane, which was carrying about 140 passengers, to an airport in central Kansas about 9:30 p.m. CDT on Thursday because of a possible wheel fire.
After inspecting the plane, technicians concluded there had not been a fire, officials said.
The passengers, meanwhile, boarded another plane at 2:45 a.m. Friday.
They flew to Dallas, where Southwest provided them with overnight hotel accommodations and food vouchers after landing about 4 a.m. They departed Texas for Baltimore later in the day, officials said.
