Police arrested a 78-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing his 70-year-old wife in their North Las Vegas home Monday afternoon.

North Las Vegas Police spokesman Aaron Patty said the man, identified as Arthur Mattox, called police about 1:30 p.m. to tell them what happened, explaining that the two had been arguing before he shot his wife.

Police responded to the 2300 block of Plumeria Avenue, near East Lone Mountain and Losee roads, where they found the woman with at least one gunshot wound. She was taken to University Medical Center and pronounced dead there.

The couple were the only two people inside the residence at the time of the shooting.

Mattox was taken into police custody and booked at the Las Vegas City Jail on one count of murder with a deadly weapon, Patty said.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the victim's identification and official cause and manner of death following family notification.
