Nonprofit aims to fill void left by shuttered organics program

Curious where you can find local organic products?

Basin and Range Organics, a nonprofit recently formed during a meeting of organic growers and industry leaders in Nevada, hopes to make that information more-readily available.

The nonprofit fills the void created by the closure of the organic certification program formerly run by the state Department of Agriculture. The program was dropped for lack of funding.

The goals for Basin and Range Organics — BARO for short — include hiring a small staff, expanding certifications, providing training and support for new organic farmers and spreading information about the benefits of organic products.

BARO will operate financially under the Healthy Communities Coalition, a nonprofit based in Dayton and headed by Christie McGill, executive director and founder.
