letter to the editor:

What will limited government cost?

Too many Americans chaff under the belief that government is too big, too intrusive. They complain every April when the tax man cometh. They become upset and irrational when they perceive that government has favored one group over another. The Affordable Care Act, police brutality, furor over drone strikes and a White House data breach are recent examples. All of this is noise; there is no in-depth look and analysis, simply video soundbites that crowdsource instantaneous responses without any substance.

Will eliminating the ACA make government smaller or simply disburse medical care and higher costs for the most needy back into state and local government? Changing police forces from one officer per 1,000 residents to one for every 2,000 residents can reduce costs and likely incident reporting. Unless someone argues that we should just walk away from the Middle East and all those terrorist factions, what is the drone strike alternative? Manning up and sending our troops into harm’s way will cost lives. Then there’s cybersecurity and ID theft protection, of which little exists today. But just think about how much limited government action has saved!

What will it cost all of us we don’t get better control of this mess?
