Unemployment rate ticks up slightly in Las Vegas, elsewhere

The unemployment rate rose in the Las Vegas area in June, but so did the number of people working.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Tuesday that the beginning average wage in Las Vegas was $2,400 a month, which also is the average statewide. The agency said newly hired workers earn about two-thirds of the average of $3,800.

The jobless rate of 7 percent grew from 6.6 percent in May, the report stated. There were an estimated 73,400 people out of work — 4,500 more than in the previous month.

The number of employed grew by 1,000, to 973,400.

The seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 6.9 percent.

There were 52,400 construction workers on the job in June. Casino and hotel employment grew to 166,500, up 400 from May; transportation, trade and utilities posted employment at 164,900, an increase of 600 workers from May.

There were 3,800 fewer local government employees during the month for a total of 63,600. And state worker jobs dropped by 100 to 9,100.

The highest monthly wage for beginning workers was $7,000 in Eureka County, with its mining industry.
