Parts of Clark County under flash flood watch for most of Thursday

Updated Wednesday, July 29, 2015 | 9:24 p.m.

A flash flood watch will be in effect Thursday for areas including Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston and southern Clark County, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch, issued 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, warned there could be debris flows in recent burn areas in the mountains as well as rapid runoff in steep terrain.

It will be in effect from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and affects areas to the south of the valley including Searchlight, weather service meteorologist Stan Czyzyk said.

There is a 20 percent chance of isolated showers Thursday in the Las Vegas Valley, especially in higher elevations, weather service meteorologist Todd Lericos said.

The skies should be sunny Thursday morning, and rain will be more likely in the afternoon, he said.

Temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 102 degrees Thursday and a low of 84 degrees Thursday night, Lericos said.

Strong winds up to 35 mph were reported Wednesday afternoon in Henderson, he said.

Meanwhile, a thunderstorm Wednesday night between Baker and Barstow, Calif., led to flooding with three to four feet of water crossing southbound Interstate 15 and stopping traffic in the area, California Highway Patrol reported.

That area was also experiencing winds up to 60 mph, according to the weather service.

Dust in the air was a concern briefly Wednesday just west of Baker due to reports of blowing dust along the I-15, Lericos said.
