A new request of those who write letters to the editor of the Sun

Letters to the editor can be an effective way of delivering a point of view on a current issue, especially if the writer is articulate and succinct. We encourage such engagement, which has a long history in America’s newspapers.

But as we know and readers may suspect, writers can be loose when dealing with figures and other data, especially if they are passing along something that they recall hearing or reading somewhere else but may not have any basis in fact. We would hope that facts and figures cited in letters are accurate, but we can’t always assume it.

As a courtesy to our readers, we now ask our letter writers to include the sources of figures or other data cited in their letters. Taking the extra step of adding those few words or providing footnotes will bring credibility to the writer’s letter. It’s a skill we should have learned in high school, and it’s time we dust it off.

And as always, we ask that you make your point in fewer than 250 words, and include your name, address and phone number. We do not publish letters from anonymous sources.

Letters can be mailed to 2360 Corporate Circle, Third Floor, Henderson NV 89074, emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 702-383-7264.
