Forestry officials warn about flying drones over wildfires

CARSON CITY — The state Division of Forestry is cautioning owners of drones not to fly them over wildfires because of potential safety hazards.

There have been recent incidents where drones have interfered with manned aircraft battling wildfires, the division said in a news release today.

“It’s a major risk to pilots, ground personnel and aircraft. There may also be civil and criminal penalties,” State Forester Bob Roper said.

Temporary flight restrictions are often put in place to protect firefighting aircraft, and violations of Federal Aviation Administration rules carry fines up to $25,000.
