North Las Vegas has paid $25,000 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit that a woman filed after police shot her two dogs while serving a search warrant in February 2008.
Attorney Cal Potter said Thursday that Louisa Thurston accomplished her goal of holding police accountable for the death of her animals.
Chief Deputy City Attorney Bethany Sanchez said the decision to settle saved the city the cost of an expensive trial.
Thurston filed a civil lawsuit in state court in February 2010.
The case was moved to federal court, where U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks found in favor of the city and police in 2012.
Thurston won her appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in January 2014, and Potter says the case was settled in March.
