Regulators give preliminary OK to solar plant

CARSON CITY — The state Public Utilities Commission today gave preliminary approval to a company to build a 200-megawatt solar generating facility 15 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

The approval was granted on the condition that Playa Solar LLC obtain the required federal, state and local permits. Once those are filed with the PUC, construction can proceed in the Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone.

The facility could supply enough energy for about 40,000 customers, according to the staff of the PUC.

Playa Solar, a subsidiary of a San Francisco firm, would employ 700 construction workers but have only five full time employees after the project is completed.

There are at least three other companies planning solar projects in the same area.

The proposed Playa Solar site is about a mile from NV Energy’s Harry Allen substation. The company will have the option to sell its solar energy to NV Energy or other customers, according to PUC staff.

In its application, Playa Solar says it intends to have the facility completed by December 2016.
