An Allegiant Air flight headed to Stockton, Calif., returned to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas this afternoon because of an engine issue, an airport spokeswoman said.

Allegiant Flight 526 left Las Vegas about 1:10 p.m. but returned and landed safely about 2 p.m., according to a statement from Allegiant.

The Clark County Fire Department inspected the plane and declared the situation safe about 2 p.m., McCarran spokeswoman Christine Crews said.

The plane, an MD-80, had 151 people aboard, she said.

The airline said the plane returned due to a "maintenance issue."

"At this time, our maintenance team is conducting a review of the aircraft, along with its maintenance and flight records to determine the cause," an Allegiant spokesperson said.

The flight was rescheduled to depart at 3:19 p.m., the company said.
