Prosecutor: Metro SWAT officer justified in fatal shooting

Clark County prosecutors won't bring charges against a Metro Police SWAT officer in the fatal shooting of an armed man last year in Spring Valley.

On April 8, 2014, the police responded to a call from a roommate who reported that Travis Jay Doering, 41, was acting erratically at his home at 5720 Maceta Ave., near Jones Boulevard and Twain Avenue, armed with an assault rifle, officials said in a statement Tuesday.

After refusing to surrender, Doering exited the residence and pointed his loaded rifle at officers. SWAT Officer John Wiggins, who was positioned on a rooftop of a home across the street, fired a single shot, striking Doering in the head and killing him, officials said.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Wiggins “had every reason to believe that Mr. Doering posed a serious threat to other officers in the area, and he acted accordingly.”

A toxicology report revealed that Doering had been using methamphetamine and marijuana.

Wiggins has worked for Metro since 2002 and is assigned to the Metro Emergency Operations Bureau SWAT section, police said.
