The Las Vegas City Council today approved naming a park after slain Metro Police Officer Alyn Beck, who was gunned down last year with another officer by a pair of anti-government extremists.

Mayor Pro Tem Steve Ross sponsored the item to rename Indian Hills Park, near Fort Apache and Iron Mountain roads, as Officer Alyn Beck Memorial Park.

Beck and fellow Officer Igor Soldo were killed June 8, 2014, when they were ambushed while eating lunch at a northeast valley pizza restaurant.

Assailants Jerad and Amanda Miller fled to a nearby Wal-Mart, where Joseph Wilcox, a shopper carrying a gun, tried to intervene and also was gunned down. The couple died in a shootout with police at the store.

The city also is planning to name a park in memory of Soldo.

“Words cannot express our gratitude for his service,” Mayor Carolyn Goodman said to Beck’s widow, Nicole Beck, who was at today’s City Council meeting. “I hope that you and your family will find a sense of peace in the park, and that everyone who will walk through the park will remember your husband.”

Ross echoed Goodman’s comments.

“It is incumbent on us to recognize those who go above and beyond the call of duty every day in our community,” Ross said. “It is our privilege and honor to name this park for Officer Beck, and we will be back here soon to do the same for Officer Soldo.”

The city is also home to Police Memorial Park, which features the fallen officer tree grove, memorial wall and memorial statute.
