Clark County unemployment hits lowest level since 2008

Unemployment in Clark County fell to 6.6 percent in May, the lowest it has been since May 2008.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Tuesday that there were an estimated 68,862 jobless people compared with 73,600 in April, when the rate was 7.2 percent.

The jobless rate in the Reno-Sparks area was 6.1 percent, down from 6.7 percent in April; Carson City's rate fell to 6.9 percent from 7.7 percent in April.

“This is the first time all three metro areas have seen an unemployment rate of less than 7 percent,” said Bill Anderson, an economist with the department.

The statewide seasonally adjusted rate, reported earlier, was 7 percent.

“Overall, the metropolitan areas are moving in the right direction, mirroring the health of the state as a whole," Anderson said.

County unemployment rates ranged from 3.8 percent in Esmeralda County to 10.7 percent in Mineral County.
