Highway Patrol: Motorcyclist riding recklessly before fatal crash

A motorcyclist killed Tuesday in a crash on Interstate 15 North near Cheyenne Avenue has been identified as Joshua Johnson, 23, of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The crash prompted the closure of the freeway.

A preliminary investigation revealed Johnson was riding recklessly about 1:30 p.m. in the third travel lane, approaching Cheyenne Avenue, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A 2001 Toyota Corolla was in the second travel lane, ahead of the 2005 Suzuki GSXR1000 motorcycle Johnson was riding, officials said. A 2014 Acura was slightly behind the Toyota in the fourth lane, officials said.

Johnson hit the back of the Toyota as he made an unsafe lane change into the second travel lane and was thrown from the motorcycle, officials said.

The motorcycle crossed into the fourth travel lane, hit the Acura and caught fire, officials said.

Johnson was pronounced dead on the scene.
