Excessive heat warning in effect through Saturday night

Updated Thursday, June 25, 2015 | 3:09 p.m.

An excessive heat warning is in effect through 9 p.m. Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach up to 114 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley.

Clouds are expected to keep nighttime temperatures higher than normal, providing limited relief from the daytime heat, according to the National Weather Service.

Highs for the next several days are expected to be 110 to 114 degrees, more than 10 degrees hotter than normal and approaching record highs of 114 to 115 degrees, weather officials said.

Temperatures in Laughlin could hit 118 degrees and Death Valley could get as hot as 124 degrees.

The weather service advises people to stay hydrated, use sunscreen and avoid outdoor activities until after the sun sets. Do not leave children or pets unattended in cars, officials said.

Increasing moisture starting Sunday is expected to result in a gradual cooling trend next week, officials said.

Cooling stations will be open through Saturday to provide shelter from the heat in the valley, according to the City of Las Vegas.

Summer day shelters will be open every day in the summer, Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said.
