Court denies man’s appeal in Las Vegas slaying

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has denied the appeal of Jesus M. Jaramillo, convicted of the fatal shooting of a man in Las Vegas in December 2008.

The court, in a decision Thursday, said the evidence against Jaramillo was overwhelming in his conviction on charges of first-degree murder, burglary and auto theft.

Jaramillo was sentenced to consecutive 20-year-to-life terms in the death of Abraham Harely Avie, who was struck in the head by a single bullet at his apartment.

Defense lawyers contended there was insufficient evidence at trial to convict Jaramillo, and there were two other men who might have killed the victim.

The court said there was sufficient evidence to establish guilt, including Jaramillo’s statements to several people that he had killed Avie.
