Sixteen apartments were destroyed in a three-alarm fire early this morning.

Crews responded to the fire at Sandpebble Village Apartments, 4480 W. Sirius Ave., around 1:38 a.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived, the building was heavily engulfed in flames, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The blaze caused an estimated $1.6 million in damage, fire chief John Steinbeck said.

The fire was so large that it was unsafe for firefighters to even walk in apartments on the top floor because the floors were so unstable, Steinbeck said.

Thirty-two apartments were evacuated and six people were transported to University Medical Center for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

All 16 units were destroyed and dozens of residents were displaced. The residents have temporary shelter at Cashman Junior High School. Twenty-two residents stayed at the shelter last night, but it is unknown how many residents were actually displaced, Steinbeck said.

Firefighters worked on the fire for several hours. As of 10:30 a.m., the Clark County Fire Department was still on scene making sure all fires are out. Fire investigators are also on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
