Private school eyes expansion to Las Vegas, plans introductory meetings

A California-based private school specializing in educating academically advanced students and those with learning challenges in nontraditional settings is exploring whether to open branches in Las Vegas.

Halstrom Academy, which has provided instruction for 16,000 California students, will hold two meetings in the valley Tuesday to introduce itself to parents of prospective students. Meetings will be at 5 p.m. at Greenspun Media Group, 2360 Corporate Circle in Henderson, and 7 p.m. at 6787 W. Tropicana Ave. in Las Vegas.

Families in the Las Vegas Valley expressed interest in Halstrom's specialized one-on-one experience, which prompted executives to consider the expansion, said Halstrom marketing representative Cindy Reynolds.

“Students process information differently,” she said.

So the academy offers an approach to the middle and high school learning experience in which curricula is adapted to each student’s needs.

Founded in 1985 by Dr. Karen Bishop, Halstrom Academy was designed for students who either struggle in a traditional classroom or are looking for a different learning environment or flexible scheduling options. Upon enrollment at Halstrom Academy, the student is matched with a teacher — the one-to-one model — with a broad knowledge of the subject matter the student wishes to pursue. Most teachers at Halstrom Academy have teaching credentials, but a solid background and knowledge of the subjects they teach are paramount requirements, Reynolds said.

While regular letter grading applies at Halstrom Academy, students must demonstrate “content mastery,” receiving an 80 percent or higher on each assignment and in each course, to advance.

Halstrom runs on a tuition-based model. Full-time tuition ranges from $17,000 to $20,000. The academy offers different options for tuition payment; it does not offer scholarships at this time.
