Metro Police officer crashes going after red-light violator

Updated Monday, March 2, 2015 | 3:47 p.m.

A Metro Police officer crashed her patrol car today after flipping on her emergency lights and siren to chase down a vehicle that ran a red light, officials said.

The 23-year-old officer, whose car smashed into a light pole and a palm tree, was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. Her name was not immediately released.

The marked Ford Crown Victoria patrol car was south on Rainbow Boulevard, stopped at a red light at Oakey Boulevard, when the officer pulled into the intersection to catch a red-light violator, police said.

Crossing El Parque Avenue, the officer lost control and the car began sliding sideways, drove up onto a sidewalk and crashed, police said. Police did not indicate how fast the patrol car was traveling.

The accident is under investigation.
