A fire at an apartment complex near downtown Las Vegas forced 23 residents from their homes and caused about $50,000 damage, according Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

No injuries were reported in the fire that broke out about 5 a.m. today at the Stewart Plaza Apartments in the 2700 block of Marlin Avenue, officials said.

Firefighters discovered smoke and flames coming from a two-story building. The fire, which started in a closet, spread from a bedroom into the attic of the building before it was extinguished, officials said.

The fire appears accidental, and an electrical origin could not be ruled out as the cause, officials said.

The apartment where the fire started was gutted, and 23 people were displaced from six apartments, officials said.

Fire officials credited smoke alarms with alerting residents to the fire before it spread and giving them time to escape.

A man and woman and two young children live in the apartment where the fire started, and they were all asleep when the smoke alarm went off, officials said.

They could not see any smoke, but smelled something burning, officials said. In searching the apartment, the residents found a bag of clothes burning in a bedroom closet, officials said.

The adults gathered up the children and fled the apartment, officials said.

Roads in the area were temporarily closed as firefighters rolled out hoses, but all streets have since been reopened.
