letter to the editor:

Giuliani playing past his prime

The recent flap over the comments by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani questioning President Obama’s love of America is akin to watching a faded athlete stumble around the game he once played with ease.

Clearly, at one time, the former mayor was a national leader who displayed resilience and strength in the aftermath of 9/11. He was good for the city of New York and galvanized a downtrodden populace needing political figures to step forward. He, in short, answered the bell.

Many readers may be unaware of the splendid work he accomplished as a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he spent years successfully prosecuting and convicting criminals.

As time has passed, and since his failed presidential run, he has stumped at various media events and speaking tours, selling a brand of security rhetoric that tends to keep fear as the forefront message. Most is standard GOP script but his voice has been increasingly marginalized as the new Republicans are looking for fresher faces with a goal toward winning the general election.

Giuliani’s time as a relevant player in national politics is, and has been, over for years. With his remarks criticizing the president, he gained the national spotlight for a couple of news cycles, made the Sunday talk shows, bleated on Fox News, but then the spotlight of attention moved elsewhere. Most respected Republican voices dismissed Giuliani’s remarks as “Rudy just being Rudy.” One commentator smirked that Giuliani had become Donald Trump without hair.

It is troubling to see his distinguished career of public service reduced to that of a sideshow barker, all the while, seeking a fading glimpse of glory.
