Las Vegas eighth-graders honored in C-SPAN contest

Three Las Vegas middle schoolers are walking home $250 richer after crafting a documentary about Obamacare that was recognized by C-SPAN.

Kayla Salehian, Elaina Young and Autumn Coulthard, all eighth-graders at the Alexander Dawson private school in Summerlin, were the only students from Southern Nevada given an honorable mention in the network's StudentCam competition. Middle and high school students around the country were tasked with making a short documentary about a national public policy issue.

The students from Las Vegas called their video "The Pros and Cons of the Affordable Care Act," and snagged an interview with Democratic Rep. Dina Titus about the act's relevance in Nevada.

C-SPAN received 2,280 entries from students around the country. A total of $100,000 in prize money was handed out to the competition's 347 winners.
