Updated Monday, March 9, 2015 | 4:52 p.m.

A man target shooting with friends in the desert northwest of Las Vegas was killed early today when he was hit by a bullet that ricocheted off a target or rock, Metro Police said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the victim as David Elliot Ferreira, 29, of Las Vegas. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death was ruled an accident.

Police say drugs and alcohol are not suspected.

The shooting happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday in northern Las Vegas off US 95 and mile marker 102. The spot is referred to as the Mud Hills shooting area.

Metro Officer Larry Hadfield says the man and two friends were shooting steel targets. Hadfield says it isn't clear if the bullet ricocheted off the target or a rock.

No charges are expected.
