Voter petitions on recreational pot, gun checks passed to Assembly

CARSON CITY — Voter petitions that would allow recreational marijuana use and expand background checks on gun purchases cleared the Assembly Judiciary Committee without recommendation today.

Committee Chairman Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, said the petitions will be moved to the full Assembly, and it would be up to the leadership whether to schedule a vote.

Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, R-Las Vegas, previously said the issues would not be considered this session.

If no action is taken by Friday, the petition initiatives will automatically go on the 2016 election ballot. They were approved by voters in December.

Initiative Petition 1 would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, and Initiative Petition 2 would require background checks on certain firearm purchases.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
