Harry Reid: Strip abortion from trafficking bill or it fails

WASHINGTON — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid says Republicans must remove an abortion provision from a human trafficking bill or the legislation won't pass.

The Nevada Democrat complained Wednesday that the provision, which would prohibit using federal dollars in a new victims fund to pay for many abortions, was not worth the failure of the main bill to crack down on human trafficking.

The provision, enacted annually for decades on other legislation, would prohibit the use of taxpayer money for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest and when the life of the woman was jeopardized.

Democrats privately conceded they should have noticed the provision but complained Republicans failed to highlight it in a list of new features in this year's bill. Republicans said Democrats had two months to read the bill.
