Substance that caused scare at high school not hazardous

Updated Monday, March 16, 2015 | 3:14 p.m.

Firefighters were called to Rancho High School in North Las Vegas today after a teacher reported five students “playing around” with an unknown substance, according to Clark County School District Police.

The incident was reported about 9 a.m., prompting a hazardous-material response from the North Las Vegas and Las Vegas fire departments. Nobody was allowed to enter or leave the school until about 1 p.m., after authorities determined the substance was not hazardous, School District Police Lt. Ken Young said.

Officials did not say what the substance turned out to be. The students did not show any adverse reaction to it, Young said.

The school is located at 1900 Searles Ave., in the area of Bruce Street and Owens Avenue.
