Letter to the Editor:

Senators’ letter is a disservice to U.S.

Forty-seven Republican senators, including Dean Heller, have signed an open letter to the leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, informing him that any negotiated agreement on their nuclear program that isn’t ratified by the Senate will be treated as an executive order. That would mean, in Sen. Heller’s interpretation, that the next president can void any agreement. The letter can be found here.

Given that Republicans invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to tell them that no deal is better than a bad deal, this letter seems intended to put the kibosh on the efforts of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry to stop Iran’s nuclear program by negotiations rather than by war. The president is serious when he says he won’t let Iran get a nuclear weapon, so I’d say war is the remaining alternative to talks.

It appears Sen. Heller and 46 other Republicans are so driven by ideology that they’re quite willing to let America’s youth spill blood to stop Iran, or they don’t really think there will be a war and don’t care if Iran gets a weapon. I don’t know if this is unprecedented, but it is sure a poke in the president’s eye and a very real disservice to the country. It might even be treasonous.
