letter to the editor:

An open letter to Sen. Dean Heller

Sen. Dean Heller,

I read your justification for being a signatory to the Republican letter to the leaders of Iran. There was a time not that long ago when politics stopped at our shores. We would always face the world with a united front.

But this month, the Republican Party in both houses of Congress has taken steps to undermine our country’s relationship with other nations.

First, John Boehner invited the leader of a foreign nation to speak before a joint session of Congress without coordinating with the executive branch. If it was meant to be a poke in the eye and undermine the foreign policy credibility of our president, it succeeded. The fact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was given a time slot that coincided with prime time in Israel was not, I’m sure, an accident. He is running for office. It only underscored the political nature of the speech. There was nothing new in that speech, and there was no reason for the invitation at this time.

But then the Republicans in the Senate were not to be outdone! You decided to send a letter to the leaders of Iran, our enemy, to ostensibly give a civics lesson (your interpretation, anyway). The only possible justification was to undermine the credibility of our president and sabotage any hope for a peaceful solution to Iran’s nuclear potential. Just how far will you go to try to make our president fail?

Shame on you and shame on the Republican Party. I will not vote for any Republican in any election at any level for the rest of your term in office.
