DMV in ‘crisis management mode’ over long wait times

CARSON CITY — The state Department of Motor Vehicles is in “crisis management mode” in dealing with hours-long wait times for service at some of its offices, the agency’s director said today.

The DMV needs 75 more employees starting July 1 to augment the staffs of its four offices in Clark County and one in Reno, Director Troy Dillard told a legislative budget subcommittee.

Customers in some offices are waiting up to five hours for service, he said. The offices can serve 100 customers an hour, but sometimes there are as many as 500 people waiting to be helped, he said.

Dillard noted that the DMV is enhancing its automated services.

Customers can check in at an office, make an appointment and then leave. They are then notified by email, text or phone about 20 minutes before their number is called.
