Nevada Senate OKs bill barring gun permits for domestic abusers

CARSON CITY — A bill barring people convicted of domestic violence from obtaining a gun permit cleared the Nevada Senate today on a 14-5 vote.

The law would also allow people with concealed weapons permits from more states to carry their guns in Nevada.

Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, proposed an amendment to tighten the concealed weapons section of the SB175, arguing that requirements in some other states are not as strict as in Nevada.

The amendment was defeated on an 8-11 vote.

The bill would double the number of states in which a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon would automatically be granted the same privilege in Nevada.

Sen. Greg Brower, R-Reno, a supporter of the bill, said it clarifies the justifiable homicide law, which would be expanded cover those who use a weapon to protect an occupied home or car from an assailant.

The measure now goes to the Assembly.
