Gay and Lesbian Community Center offers alternative sex ed courses for CCSD students

CCSD students who don’t like their school’s approach to sex education now have a lifeline.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada announced Thursday that it is offering comprehensive sex education classes to students ages 13 through 18.

They said they decided to offer the courses due to the “lack of complete programming within CCSD.” The district currently stops short of teaching its students about topics like homosexuality and gender identity largely because of pushback from parents.

The center said it would include those topics and others in its new class sessions, which will be organized by the group’s QVolution Youth Program.

The first class will run April 2 to June 30. The second session will be July 2 to Sept. 29.

Participants will need a signed permission slip from their parents to attend. At the end of the class, they will receive a certificate.

The center said the classes are being supported by the Nevada State Division of Public and Behavioral Health through a grant from the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
