Roster Makeover

It's been a month since the last Rebel Room and a lot has changed for UNLV. Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Taylor Bern get into Stephen Zimmerman's commitment, Christian Wood's departure and more, including Tony Sanchez's efforts to make the Rebels relevant in football recruiting.

Dantley Walker decided to transfer out of the UNLV basketball program but he could still end up playing in a Rebels game during the 2015-16 season.

On March 30, UNLV coach Dave Rice announced that Walker, a fan favorite at the end of the bench, was leaving in search of more playing time. On Monday the destination became known as Chaminade, a Division II school in Honolulu, announced its newest addition.

“Dantley had the greatest high school career of anyone I’ve been able to recruit,” Chaminade coach Eric Bovaird said in a statement. “He is a great kid from a great family and will fit perfectly at Chaminade.”

Since he’s transferring down to D-II, Walker doesn’t have to sit out a season and is eligible immediately. The Silverswords are the host school for the annual Maui Invitational, in which UNLV is participating Nov. 23-25.

The rest of the field includes UCLA, Kansas, St. John’s, Indiana, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. The bracket is expected to be released in August.

Walker, who became Nevada’s all-time leader in points and assists at Lincoln County High in Panaca, appeared in 11 games as a redshirt freshman, averaging 2.4 points in 5.8 minutes per game. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Some of the biggest cheers all season came when Walker hoisted up 3-pointers (he went 8-for-20 last season). If the Rebels and Silverswords play each other in the tournament, Walker would likely have both sides rooting for him, as long as UNLV wins the game.
