Metro Police detectives are investigating what they say is a murder-suicide that left a husband and wife dead this morning in the southwest valley.

Officers conducting a welfare check at an apartment in the 5200 block of South Torrey Pines Drive, near Hacienda Avenue, at 8:22 a.m., found an elderly man and woman dead from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

Homicide detectives say that the two were husband and wife and that it appears the woman shot the man with a handgun and then shot herself.

Authorities have not yet released the couple's identities.
