Ex-Nevada GOP chairman gets year in prison for HOA fraud

Former Nevada Republican Party Chairman Steve Wark has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for his role in a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud homeowner associations in Las Vegas.

Wark, a Republican strategist who also once served as chairman of the Clark County GOP, pleaded guilty in 2011 to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

Wark faced up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. Justice Department lawyers recommended the lighter sentence, citing his cooperation providing information and testifying against numerous other suspects charged in the case.

KLAS-TV reports U.S. District Judge Lloyd George sentenced Wark in Las Vegas on Monday and ordered him to report to prison Aug. 10. He'll also have to serve three years' probation following his release.
